A Guide To Maintaining Your Boiler

Your boiler is an appliance that brings gas, electricity and water together to provide hot water at your taps and heat to warm your radiators. It continually works, often every day, heating up water which is pumped around your heating system to make sure your home is warm and comfortable. Obviously having a boiler service is paramount to keeping your boiler working at its best, so if you need a boiler service in Gloucester, Cheltenham or the areas nearby, contact us today to make an appointment.

Other than a boiler service, there are a few simple things you can do yourself to help keep it working efficiently and effectively, as well as making sure you have your boiler serviced annually, these are:

  • Keep your boiler clean and tidy by wiping the case with a soft, damp cloth.
  • If you are thinking of building a cupboard around your boiler, be sure to allow for the manufacturer’s recommended clearances so it can be accessed and serviced safely. With older boilers, make sure you check the ventilation requirements!
  • Never remove the case from the boiler! Only a Gas Safe registered engineer is competent enough to work on your boiler and ensure it is working safely. Something as simple as removing a boiler case can potentially make the appliance very dangerous!
  • Install a room thermostat and do not leave the heating running when it is not needed, this not only can save you on fuel, but also on wear and tear on your boiler.
  • Turn down the heating! Try turning your room thermostat down by one degree then leave it for a day and see how you get on. If you still feel warm enough, try turning it down another degree and carry on until it feels a bit too cool and then turn it back up one degree to where you where comfortable. Every degree that you reduce your thermostat by will save around £90 a year on your heating bill in the typical home!
  • Your hot water cylinder thermostat (if applicable) should be set at 60°C. This is hot enough to kill off harmful bacteria in the water and temperatures below this may fail to do this. Temperatures below 50°C are likely to incubate bacteria and allow for harmful bacteria to multiply!
  • If your boiler has been installed with the plastic condensate pipe on an outside wall, the liquid inside the condensate pipe could freeze if the temperature drops below zero. If this happens, the boiler will shut down to protect itself and you may be given a fault code on the boilers display. External condensate pipes can be un-frozen with a hot water from a kettle. Further information can be found about this online.

Always remember to keep up a regular boiler service. It is recommended that you have your boiler serviced once a year. If you wish to book an annual boiler service in Gloucester, Cheltenham or the surrounding areas, contact us today for a competitively priced and well undertaken boiler service.
